Debunking the myths about child sponsorship programs
Thinking about sponsoring a child but feeling uncertain? Misconceptions about child sponsorship programs can make it hard to take that first step. We are here to clear the air by breaking down some common myths about child sponsorship and revealing how JAAGO is creating lasting change through its Sponsor A Child program with determination, resilience and complete transparency.
Myth #1: The Money Doesn’t Reach the Child Directly
Reality: We understand the concerns about the potential mismanagement of the donation funds or the high administrative costs, leaving little for the benefit of the sponsored child. While it is true that some administrative expenses are necessary to sustain operations, most programs ensure that the majority of the funds go towards the child’s education, health care, nutrition, and community development.
At JAAGO Foundation, we are committed to ensuring that contributions received through our Sponsor A Child program provide our students with access to qualified teachers, quality education, educational materials, nutritious meals, health check-ups and opportunities for skill development and growth. Moreover, sponsors are welcome to visit their sponsored children to ensure transparency and assurance that their contributions are directly impacting the young lives.
Myth #2: Sponsorship Creates Dependency Instead of Empowerment
Reality: By providing opportunities like education, nutrition, and healthcare, we hope that these lay the foundation of long-term self-reliance, in other words, empowerment. Children also gain practical skills and entrepreneurship training, ensuring they thrive independently.
A remarkable example of this empowerment is Lily Hossain. As one of JAAGO’s first 17 students, Lily received a quality education and the support she needed to reach her full potential. She later returned to JAAGO Foundation School in Rayer Bazar as a teacher, dedicating herself to educating underprivileged children. By giving back to her community, Lily exemplifies how sponsorship not only fosters self-sufficiency but also inspires a cycle of empowerment and positive change.
Myth #3: Sponsored children aren’t real individuals
Reality: A common misconception is that sponsored children are merely faceless names created to enhance an organization’s image. It’s natural to question what’s genuine, especially when the goal is to make a meaningful difference in a child’s life.
But at JAAGO, our sponsors don’t just support a name on a page—they build real connections with each child they are personally matched with. From the moment they are matched, sponsors are welcome to visit their sponsored child, they receive handwritten letters, drawings, and photographs. Additionally, since distance can pose a challenge for some sponsors, they can get regular updates through virtual video chats. These initiatives allow sponsors to witness the child’s journey, making it clear that their support is shaping a real life.
Myth #4: Immediate results should be visible after sponsorship.
Reality: Some expect quick changes in a child’s circumstances upon sponsorship. However, most children need continuous support and motivation to rise from their circumstances. Hence, JAAGO’s child sponsorship program is focused on steady and sustainable growth in a child’s development.
While challenging backgrounds can sometimes cause setbacks, we try to ensure that there is enough motivation for children beyond academics by providing access to extracurricular activities, healthcare, and nutritious meals. To recognise their progress, we offer certifications such as Appreciation Certificates in addition to quarterly report cards. All achievements and milestones are carefully recorded and shared with sponsors through regular updates, ensuring they remain connected to and informed about the child’s journey.
